Liberia

This bustling city is the capital of the Guanacaste Region and cultural hub of northern Costa Rica. In recent years a lot of infrastructure has been developed, making the city a key gateway for travelers visiting both Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Situated just two hours south of the Nicaraguan border at Peñas Blancas, less than an hour from some of Costa Rica's most popular beach destinations, and about three hours from Volcano Arenal and the Monteverde Cloud Forest, Liberia is a great place from which to begin or end your trip.

If your flight schedule or travel itinerary require that you spend an afternoon or an evening in Liberia, make sure to head down to the central park to try local treats such as Jugo de Caña (Sugarcane juice) or Copez Ricos (Costa Rican style Sno Cones). In addition, Liberia is a great place to try fresh seafood from the nearby coastline.
